American Gold Buffalo: PCGS PR69 DCAM
 

I am thinking about collecting this series in PR69, as opposed to PR70 which commands a greater premium.

Does anyone have any thoughts, recommendations or criticisms about starting this collection?

A great idea. The obvious challenge being the '08's. Were you thinking about just the $50 or all denominations? In any case I would forget going for 70's, you are on the right track w/ 69s.

Thanks for your comment. I was only considering the 1 oz proof coins.

And yes, the 2008 commands a very high premium, if you can even find it.

well my greatest collecting regret is not starting a complete colletion of gold buffalos (all denoms, PR and unc and business strike) when they came out 4 yrs ago as i underestimated the popularity of the buffalo design. In fact when the '06's first came out they got a very mixed reception, people especially hated the gov't sheet packaging.
Now if you were to set up at a large coin show w/ the whole 15-coin set of buffs presented nicely you'd get alot of oohs and ahhs

Me TOO! :36_3_12: :dontknow: Why I missed it! Bought a few 2006 PROOFS. Oh well.

However, they are NOT making TOO many Spouses and they started 2007
so they only number around 15 too right now; somewhat pretty in PROOF.

Frankly, thanks to you HC; I picked up MANY of them. Half OUNCE solid GOLD and PROOFED out. (many MS too)

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and the PROOF SPOUSES all L@@K good at 2:00 a.m. when the BAR is closing...right?

Also for the price of the 4 set 2008 Buffs one could almost buy MOST of the spouses.

I have the 06 and 07. I really liked them, but then blew it bigtime by not buying the 08 set in proof (or 2 sets, even better). Live and learn.

It is still a good time to collect proof buffaloes. Premium (except 2008) is lower than proof eagles. 2007 and 2009 have lower mintage than 2006, so focus on these 2 years.

These days I collect modern US coins, mostly gold, some plat and silver. If you're getting into collecting moderns there is a book coming out in a couple months by Eric Jordan which I believe will be used as the touchstone for collecting moderns of all types, it's really the first book of it's kind that will go into this kind of detail. You can pre-order here.

If you want a flavor for what the book will be like you can download a paper he wrote a few years ago... it's dated now but I found it most helpful.
